Oliver Chukwuma Igwe

Oliver Chukwuma Igwe was born on 2nd September 1948 into the family of Late Pa Daniel Uluigwe Igwe and Late Mrs. Theresa Mgborie Igwe of Umuegbelegbe, Umuturu, Umuagwo, in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State. From childhood he distinguished himself as an exceptionally brilliant, disciplined and promising young boy, completing his primary education at Holy Family School, Umuagwo at just twelve years of age — among the earliest sons of Umuagwo to achieve such distinction after Standard Six.

He proceeded to Ohaji High School, Mgbirichi, obtaining the West African School Certificate with credit passes in all subjects in November 1972, followed by the Teachers' Grade II Certificate in July 1974. While teaching, he prepared privately for the GCE, sat for JAMB, and in 1982 gained admission into the University of Calabar to study Law, graduating on 20th August 1986 with a Bachelor of Laws (Second Class Upper Division).

Before turning to law, he served diligently as a teacher under the Ministry of Education at Ohoba and later Obosima Secondary School, before voluntarily resigning to pursue his legal education. He proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, Lagos, and was called to the Nigerian Bar on 22nd October 1987 as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria — and remained an active legal practitioner until his final afternoon.

He began in the chambers of the late Hon. Justice J. Obasi Iwuagwu, later working alongside Barrister E. C. Mere, before establishing Uluigwe Law Chambers, his professional home for nearly four decades. He became widely acknowledged as the oldest practising lawyer within the Ohaji legal jurisdiction, earning enormous respect from the Bench, the Bar and the public, and personally mentored countless young men and women from Ohaji into the legal profession.

In February 1991 he was honoured with the traditional title “Okpe Udo I of Ohaji” by His Royal Majesty Eze Ahurukwe of Mgbirichi/Abakuru Autonomous Community. As Parish Council Chairman of Immaculate Heart Catholic Parish, Umuagwo, he played a pivotal role in relocating the church to its permanent site and championed the completion of its roofing project, receiving the Ezinwa Parish Award (2009) and Ezinna Award (2025) for his devotion to God's work. Within Liberty Age Grade he was admired as a dependable leader and peacemaker, and remained a sponsor of community organisations and a quiet benefactor to countless individuals whose lives he transformed.

Chief Barrister Igwe married the love of his life, Mrs. Celine Ngozi Igwe of Umunguma, Umuagwo, in a union founded upon love, mutual respect, faith and unwavering commitment. Following her passing over eleven years ago, he remained faithful to her memory and never remarried. Their marriage was blessed with six children — four daughters and two sons, all graduates of reputable Nigerian universities. A devoted Catholic, he believed strongly in education, discipline, integrity and the fear of God, and was, to his children, more than a father: a mentor, teacher, counsellor and dependable source of wisdom.

That afternoon began like every other ordinary day. Chief Barrister Oliver Chukwuma Igwe attended to his usual activities without any complaint of illness or discomfort. After returning home, he sat quietly at his favourite spot in the sitting room. There, peacefully and without struggle, the Lord called His faithful servant home. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.
